Bulletproof backpacks. For kids.
Armored.
Backpack.
It is a real product that you can buy. I know that’s true because after the last school shooting…
Wait.
Read that again.
“The latest school shooting.”
School shootings occur so frequently in our country that we have come to call them “the latest.”
Let’s get back to where I started – after the most recent heartbreaking, tragic, terrifying and deadly school shooting, I started looking for gear to protect a boyfriend who will soon be starting kindergarten.
I thought it was a practical solution to an impossible problem.
This is not the case.
It is not the job of a five-year-old, or any child for that matter, to protect themselves from gunfire at school, or anywhere. Protecting children and protecting each other is our job. Collectively.
So what’s the answer?
I don’t pretend to know, but I know the answer can’t be “nothing”.
What impact do we have on our children as they practice active shooting where they are meant to build the foundations of their education? What is the impact of these exercises and shootings on the lives of our children ACE results?
We have to try something. Anything. What if we asked Denmark? What if we consulted Australia? What if we looked at their models and saw the drop in gun death tolls after government buyout programs? How about we just try one thing?
We have to do something because nothing has proven over and over again not to work.
Our children deserve better.
We deserve better.
Peace.
